3. State Information Ministers Conference begins today

5. Justice Mian Saqib Nisar appointed next Chief Justice of Pakistan
- Senior judge of the Supreme Court Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan.
- Justice Nisar will replace Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, who is set to retire on December 30.
6. International Anti-Corruption Day
- Today, 9 December, is Anti-corruption Day and people throughout the world are taking action
- Every year $1 trillion is paid in bribes while an estimated $2.6 trillion are stolen annually through corruption – a sum equivalent to more than 5 per cent of the global GDP. In developing countries, according to the United Nations Development Programme, funds lost to corruption are estimated at 10 times the amount of official development assistance.

7. International film festival of Kerala begins
- International film festival of Kerala begins today in the capital city Thiruvananthapuram.
- 185 films from 62 countries will attract cinema lovers during the 8 day-ong annual film festival of this State.
- There will be 490 screenings in the 13 theatres in Thiruvananthapuram. The film festival was started in 1996 and is hosted by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.

- The Board of Directors of IDFC Bank has approved the appointment of Ms. Veena Mankar as the Non-Executive Chairperson, with effect from December 09, 2016, up to July 26, 2018.
- The appointment is subject to approval of the RBI.

10. Govt. announces package for promotion of Digital and cashless Economy
- The government announced a series of eleven measures designed to increase the pace of digital payments towards ushering in a cashless economy.
- Among the measures, payment by card for petrol and diesel will enjoy a discount of 0.75 per cent, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters here.
11. NABARD provide two PoS devices in villages of ten thousand population
- Nabard on Thursday announced that it will extend support to banks for deployment of two PoS devices per village in one lakh villages of Tier 5 and 6 areas having a population of up to 10,000. The estimated support will be around R120 crore.
- Aim: Is to encourage cashless transactions in remote areas and reach out of to new places that have been out of the ambit of such transactions.
- Nabard will provide support to banks to acquire some 2 lakh PoS devices which are expected to cover some 1 lakh villages.
- The sanctioning process is expected to be completed by March 31, 2017, and the banks are expected to finish acquisition of PoS machines by December 31, 2017. Nabard will bear 60% of the cost of the machines while the banks will put in the rest. A PoS device usually costs around R8,000 to R12,000 in the market.

12. First American in orbit John Glenn passes away
- NASA Pioneer and former US Senator John Glenn passes away at the age of 95.
- Glenn gained popularity after his February 1962 Friendship 7 Mission.
- He was the first American to orbit planet Earth.

13. Mumbai Test: Ravichandran Ashwin equals Kapil Dev`s record of 23 five-wicket hauls
- The off-spinner picked up 6 wickets in the first innings of the Mumbai Test match against England and thus equalled a man who has inspired an entire generation of cricketers in India.
- This was the 23rd time that Ashwin had picked up a 5-wicket haul in a Test match, considered by pundits as an equivalent of a Test century by a batsman, thus emulating the legendary Kapil Dev, who too picked up 23 5-wicket hauls in his decorated career.
